£2.5bn Manchester Housing upgrade framework
Procure Plus will release a £2.5 repair and maintenance framework for Manchester which will come into action in August 2023.
Public housing, schools and offices are included in the framework which is divided into 40 lots across 3 regions: Cumbria, Midlands and north west.

£10.5m Derbyshire health services project

Kier has won a £10.5m contract to replace 2 outdated NHS buildings with one MMC (Modern Methods of Construction in Bakewell. The building will provide healthcare services and an ambulance base for Bakewell and Derbyshire and will replace Newholme hospital. The new centre will open in 2024.
£26m Ash railway station new road & bridge

A new road and bridge will replace a busy station level crossing at Ash Station in Guildford, Surrey. It will replace a railway crossing that is down for up to 25 minutes every hour and planned rail services upgrades mean it will be down for longer.
The new road and bridge will enable further residential development in the area and ease congestion for current and future traffic. It will also ease traffic on rural roads that cars are now using to avoid the crossing. The project includes a new road bridge and a pedestrian foot bridge.
Due to complete in Spring 2024, the £26m project is funded by Homes England’s Housing Infrastructure Fund and developers and out to tender with a deadline of 17 October. Bidders must have a Network Rail Principal Contractor Licence to apply. Click here for more info or to apply.

£25M Scottish Highlands Rest and Be Thankful road overhaul

Transport Scotland has appointed WSP and Atkins jv to revamp the Rest & Be Thankful lookout road in the Scottish highlands after years of landslides caused by increased rainfall.
It is the highest point on the A83. It is a known landslide risk and the project’s purpose is to remove the landslide risk.
The project has been in planning stages for some time now with Transport Scotland originally consulting with the Norwegian Government about long-term solutions. There were a number of options considered with the tunnelling solution the preferred route.

Octopus Energy’s ‘Electric Universe’ roaming charging service brings together charging point suppliers globally such as IONITY, Osprey, Mer, Fastned, Char.gy and EVBox. Just in the last two months Geniepoint, MFG and ShellRecharge.
The roaming service offers to the consumer one card to pay for EV charging costs anywhere.
It has recently launched an interactive map showing all charge points in 50 countries.
The electric vehicle industry is due to grow by 500% by 2030.
New London river tunnel commences with Jill the Tunnel Boring Machine

Tunnelling has commenced on London’s newest river crossing, the Silvertown tunnel between Newham and Greenwich.
The 1.4km tunnel will ease traffic in the Blackwall tunnel and provide a new bus route over the river.
Jill the tunnel boring machine named after Jill Viner the first woman London bus driver has an almost 12m cutter face and is 82m long! It will move around 10m of earth a day and when it is finished one tunnel it will return to do the other one.
Road closures start from 17 October during school holidays when it is usually quieter and will continue until 2023. Barges are being used to remove and deliver materials, reducing road traffic around the area.
Transport for London (TfL) and Riverlinx have confirmed the tunnel will open in 2025.

£700m Hertfordshire film studio

Erith Group has won the £700m contract to build Sunset Waltham Cross Studios in Hertfordshire.
The 37-hectare site will house 21 sound stages, 39k sq m of studio space, and 23k sqm of office space.
Planning permission was granted in July for the £1bn Hollywood development to open in 2025 which will be one of the UK’s largest film and television production locations.
It will be the first location outside the US for the owner of Sunset Studios financed by private equity firm Blackstone.
As streaming companies such as Netflix create their own content, demand for studio space for bespoke and unique content has increased.
