Integrating private and public 5G networks and IoT networks
Real Wireless is contributing to a project led by Loughborough University to address advancing telecommunication technologies through an innovative approach to integrating private and public 5G networks with KNX based IoT networks. The other partners of the project are Electronic Media Services Ltd (EMS), Cascoda Ltd and AttoCore Ltd.
The 5G-IoTNet project takes an innovative approach to seamlessly federate multiple networks, including private 5G networks, public 5G networks, and IoT networks. This federation model provides an opportunity for network operators to maintain full control of their networks while benefiting from extended coverage. The project is building a system prototype at TRL 7. Traditionally, the KNX IoT protocol is implemented as an on-premises local network that is limited to a single commercial property or estate. The project aims to develop a solution to address the developing building management and automation IoT requirements across various sectors, focusing on smart building management in sports and entertainment venues optimising the IoT capabilities of both 5G and KNX technologies.
KNX is an open standard protocol for commercial and domestic building automation and is fully Internet Protocol based.. As part of the project the existing KNX IoT hub has been improved to communicate with an Android app that monitors building automation data. It allows different users to interact flexibly with buildings at different levels of access. e.g. users of a building, systems in a building such as air-conditioning, building management level (facilities management) and installers. The outcomes of this project will provide a realistic pathway to meet the requirements of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, which aims to achieve a fully decarbonised building stock in Europe by 2050, contributes directly to the EU’s energy and climate goals. An on-site demo is planned for Q1 2025 based on the prototype developed by the Loughborough University, EMS, Cascoda and AttoCore.
Real Wireless is developing a comprehensive business plan to highlight the key features, benefits, competitive advantages, and value proposition of the 5G-IoTNet solution. Our goal is to create a credible market analysis, value proposition and commercialisation and go-to-market strategy. Additionally, we are formulating the next steps to conduct independent due diligence on the technical solution in progress and define a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), incorporating any necessary innovations and enhancements. The plan also involves executing a market engagement strategy focused on the prop-tech industry and conducting a pre-commercial pilot of the MVP in collaboration with a prospective prop-tech client organisation.
